CUBO sideboard is a playful split-level asymmetrical sideboard in a mid-gloss ‘All White’ finish.

We love the clean lines and the monochromatic colour palette of the hero piece of this storage collection. Captured here by the British Living Etc team for the June 2021 issue of the magazine

Even though we are a small team here at PFEIFER we are NOT small in ideas. It is actually the opposite - we are inspired by many things and sometimes have trouble keeping our ideas and thoughts compartmentalised. Our ‘Cubo sideboard’ is a great example of how thinking outside of the box, or in this case, playing with boxes can result in a sleek 3D cubic design.

Play is often part of our design and development process. For this project we created a collection of simple 3 dimensional cubes out of cardboard and tape - these little geometric shapes really allowed us to feel the form in space. Repeatedly stacking them and letting them tumble led the way to the beautiful split-level design of the final sideboard, complete with its sleek clean lines. Inspired by the repeated stacking cubic forms of American artist Donald Judd we then developed the sideboard into a small collection of ‘Living and dining’ storage pieces to brief with the retail buyer at Dwell.co.uk.

Leonhard has admired Judd’s work since his university days and we first saw his work IRL (in real life…. hey hey) in NYC in 2005. We were in town for our first ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) and the sounds and the sights of the Big Apple were intoxicating for us ‘freshed-faced country kids’. I remember Leonhard being mesmerised by this piece of work at the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) and trying to investigate the construction details. He was so engrossed and leaning in looking closely at the bolted joints that he was startled by the MOMA Security guard who literally sang, MC Hammer style ‘You can’t touch that!’.
